A notice board at Manor Farm gives a short history of the vilage including an account of this event: On Christmas Eve 1874 in heavy snow and freezing conditions a G.W.R. train travelling from Paddington to Birmingham took on an extra coach and more passengers at Oxford. This final coach became derailed at Kidlington, but the train continued to Hampton Gay crashing over the bridge and into the river Cherwell.
