Martin GILES (1767-1831)

      Photograph by E.L.McMullin 8 April 1990 When Martin Giles was born in Hampton Gaye in 1740 the manor was in use and the principal employer was a thriving paper mill. A notice board at Manor Farm gives a short history of the vilage including an account of this event: On Christmas Eve 1874 in heavy snow and freezing conditions a G.W.R. train travelling from Paddington to Birmingham took on an extra coach and more passengers at Oxford. This final coach became derailed at Kidlington, but the train continued to Hampton Gay crashing over the bridge and into the river Cherwell. The casualties were taken into the Manor House and nearby homes.    
 

Martin GILES [1056], son of Martin GILES (1740-1801) [1055] and Mary FAULKNER (1740-1824) [998], was born in 1767 in Hampton Gay, Oxfordshire. He was baptised on 28 June 1767 in Bletchingdon, Oxfordshire. Martin the son of Martin and Mary GYLES of Hampton Gay. Martin married Jane HADLAND [1080] on 6 July 1790 in Bletchingdon. GYLES of Hampton Gay neither signed Jane from Blechington wittnessed by R WARNER and JC. Martin had a Removal Order made against him on 30 November 1790 in Oxford, Oxfordshire. This stated that Martin and his wife Jane did not have a legal settlement in Hampton Gay and were removed to Hampton Poyle. Martin died in January 1831 in Hampton Poyle, Oxfordshire. He was buried on 2 January 1831 in Hampton Poyle.

 

Jane HADLAND [1080], daughter of Richard HADLAND (1721?-1805) [7291] and Mary WOODWARD (1731-1807) [7292], was born in 1769 in Shipton on Cherwell, Oxfordshire. She was baptised on 5 November 1769 in Shipton on Cherwell. She had a Removal Order made against her on 30 November 1790 in Oxford. This stated that Martin and his wife Jane did not have a legal settlement in Hampton Gay and were removed to Hampton Poyle. Jane appeared in the census on 6 June 1841 in Hampton Poyle. Jane GILES 70 born in the county was with her son Richard and his family. Jane died before 1851. She and Martin GILES had the following children:

 

Thomas GILES (1791?-1865) [1072]. Thomas was born in 1791 (approx.) in Hampton Poyle. He married Mary DUNSBY [975] on 7 May 1809 in Somerton, Oxfordshire. Between 1813 and 1834 he was a Labourer in Hampton Poyle. He appeared in the census on 6 June 1841 in Hampton Poyle. Thomas GILES 50 a Higgler born in the county was with his wife Mary and children John, Thomas, Ann, Sarah, Robert and Emma. Also in the house was Hannah SMITH 15 a Female Servant. On 6 June 1841 Thomas was a Higgler. An higgler is a peddler. Thomas appeared in the census on 30 March 1851 in Hampton Poyle. Thomas GILES 62 an eggler from Hampton Poyle was with his wife Mary, children Mary and Emma and grandson Joseph. Joseph's relationship to the head is given as son but he Mary's son. Thomas' brother Richard is in the next house and daughter Susan ELLARD the house after. On 30 March 1851 Thomas was an Eggler. An eggler collects eggs from farmer and sells them in the market. On 3 November 1851 Thomas was an Innkeeper. In 1852 he was listed in History, Gazetteer and Directory of the County of Oxford at Bell in Hampton Poyle. He was a victualler. On 8 September 1858 Thomas was a Carrier. He did not appeared in the census on 7 April 1861. The returns for Hampton Poyle are missing. On 9 August 1865 Thomas was a Dealer in Poultry and Publican. He died of Cancer of the stomach on 9 August 1865 in Hampton Poyle. He was buried on 13 August 1865 in Hampton Poyle.

William GILES (1793- ) [1078]. William was born in 1793 in Hampton Poyle. He was baptised on 28 April 1793 in Hampton Poyle.

Martin GILES (1798- ) [1057]. Martin was born in 1798 in Hampton Poyle. He was baptised on 4 November 1798 in Hampton Poyle. He married Elizabeth DUNSBY [972] on 7 November 1825 in Somerton. He married Margaret ROSE [1131] on 21 July 1828 in Somerton. He appeared in the census on 30 March 1851 at Village in North Aston, Oxfordshire. Martin GILES 52 a Coal Merchant from Hampton Poel was with wife Margaret and daughter Elizabeth. Martin was a Coal Merchant.

Richard GILES (1807-1903) [1062]. Richard was born in 1807 in Hampton Poyle. He was baptised on 12 April 1807 in Hampton Poyle. He married Hannah BAYLIS [1126] on 10 October 1826 in Stratton Audley, Oxfordshire. He appeared in the census on 6 June 1841 in Hampton Poyle. Richard GILES 30 an Ag Lab born in the county was with his wife Hannah, children William, Jane and Emma, and mother Jane GILES. Richard appeared in the census on 30 March 1851 in Hampton Poyle. Richard GILES 43 a Farm Labourer from Hampton Poyle was with his wife Hannah, son William and his wife Eliza and daughter Emma. His brother Thomas was in the next house. Richard appeared in the census on 2 April 1871 in Hampton Poyle. Richard GILES 63 an Ag Lab from Hampton Poyle was with wife Hannah and grandson Edwin BOYS. Richard appeared in the census on 3 April 1881 in Hampton Poyle. Richard GILES 74 a Widower Shepherd from Hampton Poyle was with grandson Edward BOYS. Edwin was listed as a lodger. On 3 April 1881 Richard was a Shepherd. He appeared in the census on 5 April 1891 at Church St in Kidlington, Oxfordshire. Richard GILES 84 a widower from Hampton Poyle was with his son in law and daughter William and Jane BELGROVE. Richard appeared in the census on 31 March 1901 at Church St in Kidlington. Richard GILES 93 a widower, formerly a Shepherd [Retired] from Hampton Poyle was boarding with Ann PERRIN 62 a widow Seamstress [Shirt] working on her own account at home, and her daughter Frances A BATES 22 a Laundress also working on her own account at home. Richard died in January 1903 in Kidlington. He was buried on 26 January 1903 in Kidlington.

Anne GILES (1812- ) [1034]. Anne was born in 1812 in Hampton Poyle. She was baptised on 5 April 1812 in Hampton Poyle.
