Thomas GILES (1791?-1865)

      Thomas Giles lived at the Bell Inn and kept the Inn from about 1847 until his death in 1865 when his daughter Mary Giles took it over.    
 

Thomas GILES [1072], son of Martin GILES (1767-1831) [1056] and Jane HADLAND (1769-bef1851) [1080], was born in 1791 (approx.) in Hampton Poyle, Oxfordshire. He married Mary DUNSBY [975] on 7 May 1809 in Somerton, Oxfordshire. Between 1813 and 1834 he was a Labourer in Hampton Poyle. He appeared in the census on 6 June 1841 in Hampton Poyle. Thomas GILES 50 a Higgler born in the county was with his wife Mary and children John, Thomas, Ann, Sarah, Robert and Emma. Also in the house was Hannah SMITH 15 a Female Servant. On 6 June 1841 Thomas was a Higgler. An higgler is a peddler. Thomas appeared in the census on 30 March 1851 in Hampton Poyle. Thomas GILES 62 an eggler from Hampton Poyle was with his wife Mary, children Mary and Emma and grandson Joseph. Joseph's relationship to the head is given as son but he Mary's son. Thomas' brother Richard is in the next house and daughter Susan ELLARD the house after. On 30 March 1851 Thomas was an Eggler. An eggler collects eggs from farmer and sells them in the market. On 3 November 1851 Thomas was an Innkeeper. In 1852 he was listed in History, Gazetteer and Directory of the County of Oxford at Bell in Hampton Poyle. He was a victualler. On 8 September 1858 Thomas was a Carrier. He did not appeared in the census on 7 April 1861. The returns for Hampton Poyle are missing. On 9 August 1865 Thomas was a Dealer in Poultry and Publican. He died of Cancer of the stomach on 9 August 1865 in Hampton Poyle. He was buried on 13 August 1865 in Hampton Poyle.

 

Mary DUNSBY [975], daughter of John DUNSBY (1760-1834) [974] and Mary HILL (1763?-1821) [1084], was born in 1791 in Kidlington, Oxfordshire. She was baptised on 21 August 1791 at St Mary in Kidlington. She appeared in the census on 6 June 1841 in Hampton Poyle. Mary GILES 45 born in the county was with her husband Thomas and children John, Thomas, Ann, Sarah, Robert and Emma. Also in the house was Hannah SMITH 15 a Female Servant. Mary appeared in the census on 30 March 1851 in Hampton Poyle. Mary GILES 61 an Egglers Wife from Kidlington was with her husband Thomas, children Mary and Emma and grandson Joseph. Mary did not appeared in the census on 7 April 1861. The returns for Hampton Poyle are missing. Mary made a will on 20 April 1869 in Hampton Poyle. She died of Brain disease 2 years certified on 7 April 1870 in Hampton Poyle. She was buried on 11 April 1870 in Hampton Poyle. Her estate was probated on 13 September 1870 in Oxford, Oxfordshire.

 

Although when she was baptised on 21 Aug 1791 in Kidlington, her father given as Thomas DUNSBY but we believe it should be John.

Jane GILES (1811- ) [1043]. Jane was born in 1811 in Hampton Poyle. She was baptised on 30 June 1811 in Hampton Poyle. She married James BERRY [2070] on 26 January 1831 in Wendlebury, Oxfordshire. She appeared in the census on 30 March 1851 in Wendlebury. Jane BERRY 39 from Hampton Poyle was with husband James and children Mary, Emma, John, William, Henry, James and Thomas. Jane appeared in the census on 7 April 1861 at Oxford Road in Wendlebury. Jane BERRY 50 an Ag Lab Wife from Hampton Poyle was with husband James 52 and sons John 22, Henry 16, James 12 and Thomas 10. Jane was beneficiary in the will of Mary GILES nee DUNSBY on 20 April 1869. She appeared in the census on 3 April 1881 in Wendlebury. Jane BERRY 69 a widow from Hampton Poyle was on her own in the house between the Plough Inn and the Grocer Shop.

Susan GILES (1813-1888) [1069]. Susan was born in 1813 in Hampton Poyle. She was baptised on 26 September 1813 in Hampton Poyle. She married Joseph ELLARD [992] on 14 September 1835 in Hampton Poyle. The marriage was witnessed by James CHUMP and Hannah COX. Hannah was the sister of Joseph. Susan appeared in the census on 6 June 1841 in Hampton Poyle. Susan ELLARD 25 was born in the county and was with her husband Joseph and children Elizabeth, Thomas and Richard. Susan appeared in the census on 30 March 1851 in Hampton Poyle. Susan ELLARD 38 from Hampton Poyle was At Home with husband Joseph and children Thomas, Richard, Mary, Ann and Harriet. Her parents were 2 houses away. Susan married Emmanuel EDMONDS [981] on 8 September 1858 in Hampton Poyle. She was beneficiary in the will of Mary GILES nee DUNSBY on 20 April 1869. She appeared in the census on 2 April 1871 in Hampton Poyle. Susan EDMONDS 58 an Ag Lab from Hampton Poyle was with her husband Emanuel. She was next door to her sister Mary. Susan appeared in the census on 3 April 1881 in Hampton Poyle. Susan EDWARDS 68 a Labourer from Hampton Poyle with husband Emanuel. Susan died in March 1888 in Hampton Poyle. She was buried on 26 March 1888 in Hampton Poyle.

William GILES (1815- ) [1074]. William was born in 1815 in Hampton Poyle. He was baptised on 9 July 1815 in Hampton Poyle.

John GILES (1818-1900) [1044]. John was born in 1818 in Hampton Poyle. He was baptised on 3 May 1818 in Hampton Poyle. He appeared in the census on 6 June 1841 in Hampton Poyle. John GILES 72 an employed Gardener from Hampton Poyle was with his wife Elizabeth and daughter Jane. Elsie KIRTLAND 71 from Bletchington was visiting them. On 5 April 1891 John was a Gardener. He was a Parish Clerk. He died on 6 September 1900 in Hampton Poyle. He was buried on 11 September 1900 in Hampton Poyle.

Elizabeth GILES (1821- ) [1038]. Elizabeth was born in 1821 in Hampton Poyle. She was baptised on 7 January 1821 in Hampton Poyle. She married Q4 1849 in Headington District, Oxfordshire. She married William GOODY [9965] Q4 1849 in Headington District. She appeared in the census on 30 March 1851 in Garsington, Oxfordshire. Elizth GOODEY 30 a Tailor’s Wife from Hampton Poyle was with her husband William son Thos Giles 1 from Garsington and father in law John GOODEY 74 a widower Thatcher from Garsington. Elizabeth appeared in the census on 7 April 1861 at Mew Hinksey in South Hinksey, Berkshire.

Martin GILES (1823-1906) [1058]. Martin was born in 1823 in Hampton Poyle. He was baptised on 27 April 1823 in Hampton Poyle. He married Hannah BECKETT [1171] in 1843 (estimated) in Oxfordshire. From 1844 he was a Labourer. He appeared in the census on 30 March 1851 in Hampton Gay, Oxfordshire. Martin GILES 28 a Farm Labourer from Hampton Poyle was with wife Hannah and children Anne, Sarah and William. Martin appeared in the census on 2 April 1871 in Hampton Poyle. Martin GILES 48 an Ag Shepherd from Hampton Poyle was with wife Hannah and children William and Mary. Their daughter Ann was next door with her husband William WING. On 2 April 1871 Martin was a Shepherd. He appeared in the census on 3 April 1881 in Hampton Poyle. Martin GILES 38 a widower Ag Lab from Hampton Poyle was on his own. His age should be 58. He was next door to his brother John and 2 doors from John YOUNG in the Bell. On 3 April 1881 Martin was an agricultural labourer. He appeared in the census on 5 April 1891 at -The Village in Hampton Poyle. Martin GILES 68 a Widower employed Farm Labourer from Hampton Poyle was on his own next door to the The Bell. The Inn keeper was his cousin’s widow Eliza YOUNG. On 5 April 1891 Martin was a farm labourer. He appeared in the census on 31 March 1901 in Hampton Poyle. Martin GILES 78 a widower from Hampton Poyle was on his own in a two room house. Sister-in-law Elizabeth was next house and two houses the other way was the Bell Inn. Martin died on 18 February 1906 in Hampton Poyle. There was an coroners inquest into the death. Martin was buried on 24 February 1906 in Hampton Poyle.

Mary GILES (1826-1879) [1061]. Mary was born in 1826 in Hampton Poyle. She was baptised on 26 March 1826 in Hampton Poyle. She appeared in the census on 30 March 1851 in Hampton Poyle. Mary GILES 25 from Hampton Poyle was with her parents and son Joseph. Mary appeared in the census on 2 April 1871 in Hampton Poyle. Mary GILES 45 a Licensed Victualler from Hampton Poyle had three lodgers John WOODWARD 28 a Mason’s Labourer from Wolvercott, his wife Susan and baby son John. She was next door to her son Joseph on one side and her sister Mary on the other. On 2 April 1871 Mary was a licensed victualler. In 1876 she was listed in J.G. Harrod & Co.'s Royal County Directory at Bell Inn in Hampton Poyle. The listing gave her as Mrs Mary Giles although she never married. Mary died on 1 November 1879 in Hampton Poyle. She was buried on 3 November 1879 in Hampton Poyle.

Thomas GILES (1828-1878) [1073]. Thomas was born in 1828 in Hampton Poyle. He was baptised on 15 June 1828 in Hampton Poyle. He appeared in the census on 6 June 1841 in Hampton Poyle. Thomas GILES 13 born in the county was with his parents. Thomas appeared in the census on 30 March 1851 at In The Village in Westcott Barton, Oxfordshire. Thomas GILES 22 a House Servant [Domestic] from Hampton Powel was working for and living with Simon HUGGINS 50 a Farmer & Dealer who had 115 Acres and employed 8 Labourers. There was one other house servant and and apprentice living in. On 30 March 1851 Thomas was a House Servant. He married Eliza ALLEN [957] on 3 November 1851 at Parish Church in Hampton Poyle. He appeared in the census on 7 April 1861 at Vine Street in Evesham, Worcestershire. Thomas GILES 38 a Labourer whose birthplace was ‘Not known’ with his wife Eliza and children Susan, Joseph, William, Frederick and David were lodging with George and Mary BELCHER. On 7 April 1861 Thomas was a Labourer. He made a will on 26 April 1869 in Hampton Poyle. He appeared in the census on 2 April 1871 at Wassall Grove in Hagley, Worcestershire. Thomas GILES 42 a Farm Labourer from Hampton Poyle was with his wife Eliza and children; Susan, Joseph, Henry, John, Eliza and Thomas. His son Frederick 12 was visiting William SOLE next door. On 2 April 1871 Thomas was a farm labourer. On 19 February 1878 he was a Farm Bailiff in Mathon, Worcestershire. He died of Diseased Heart and Dropsy on 19 February 1878 in Mathon. He was a farm bailiff when he died. His daughter Susan was present at his death and was the informant.

Ann GILES (1830- ) [1032]. Ann was born in 1830 in Hampton Poyle. She was baptised on 29 August 1830 in Hampton Poyle. She appeared in the census on 6 June 1841 in Hampton Poyle. Ann GILES 11 born in the county was with her parents. Ann married Thomas HUMPHRIES [1087] on 3 June 1850 in Hampton Poyle. She was beneficiary in the will of Mary GILES nee DUNSBY on 20 April 1869.

Sarah GILES (1832- ) [1067]. Sarah was born in 1832 in Hampton Poyle. She was baptised on 20 May 1832 in Hampton Poyle. She appeared in the census on 6 June 1841 in Hampton Poyle. Sarah GILES 10 born in the county was with her parents. Sarah married John GIBBS [1030] on 11 March 1855 in Hampton Poyle. She was beneficiary in the will of Mary GILES nee DUNSBY on 20 April 1869. She appeared in the census on 3 April 1881 at New Hinksey Inn, Abingdon Rd. in South Hinksey. Sarah GIBBS 48 from Hampton Quay with husband John. Sarah appeared in the census on 5 April 1891 at Mill St in Kidlington. Sarah GIBBS 59 from St Aldates, Oxford was with her husband John. Her nephew Joseph GILES was next door. They had a lodger Walter BASTON 26 a Miller from Clanfield and a lodger who was 'Temporary from Home'.

Joseph GILES (1834-1834) [1050]. Joseph was born in March 1834 in Hampton Poyle. He was baptised on 2 March 1834 in Hampton Poyle. He died in May 1834 in Hampton Poyle. He was buried on 23 May 1834 in Hampton Poyle.
