Albert Allman HOLLIOAKE [890], son of John HOLLIOAKE (1848-1913) [927] and Elizabeth Skellet MELLOR (1850-1899) [928], was born on 3 August 1887 in Birmingham, Warwickshire. He appeared in the census on 5 April 1891 at 2bk52 Lombard St. in Aston, Warwickshire. Albert 3 was still using the surname HOLYOAK. He was living with his father John, a lodger, and his mother Elizabeth JOHNSON the head of household. Albert was educated at Floodgate St. Infants School from 4 March 1895 to July 1895 in Birmingham. Albert Ormond HOLYOAKE was living at 2 court 2 house Mill Lane and left the school at end of Summer term. Albert was educated at Floodgate St. Boys School from 18 November 1895 to 20 November 1895 in Birmingham. Albert HOLYOAK was living at 1/13 Cheapside. He left because of bad eyes having completed standard I. From 12 April 1899 to 7 November 1905 Albert was resident at Marston Green Cottage Home in Marston Green, Birmingham. Going through the Marsden Green Cottage Homes School's Log Books there is no mention of either Albert or Violet Johnson. It was obviously a very caring community much visited by the Cadbury's. Hearing and eye tests regularly arranged, trips (even to Llandudno!) days off etc. Monthly references to time off when "Parents visited from workhouse" or "children visited mothers in workhouse". Also the temperatures of classrooms were recorded and children sent back to their cottages when it was too cold and when workmen were burning rubbish near the boys school, it was deemed "unsuitable for the boys" and they were sent to share the girls school till the smell had gone. I was very reassured that he was in a better place than he left. He wasn't in the "absconder's lists" anyway - perhaps he couldn't see well enough to do so! Like all Cadbury's 19th century projects it comes over as very caring. He stayed in house next to clock tower and was given a Bible and a booklet on leaving. The Cottage Homes became a mental hospital and was demolished when the hospital closed. Albert appeared in the census on 31 March 1901 at Cottage Homes. in Marston Green. Albert JOHNSON 13 was an inmate of the home and was born in Birmingham. On 7 November 1905 Albert was resident at Pear Tree Farm. in Yardley, Worcestershire. On leaving the home he went into service to a Mr Parslow. A dairyman from Warwick named Wm.Henry Parslow is living in Yew Tree Lane Yardley on the 1901 census with his wife and 2 daughters. In 1913 Albert was a Master Dairyman. After leaving the Home he went to live at Lea Hall Farm, a dairy farm and became a milkman with his own round using a hand cart with churns and measuring jugs. His trade card stated he made two deliveries a day except when he married and it became a Milkman's Holiday. They went to the Bull's Head after the service and were too drunk to do the afternoon round. He lost the milk round when he was called up for war service. To 3 June 1914 Albert was resident at 18 Albert Road in Stechford, Birmingham. Lodging with the Atkins. Albert married Emily MARSHALL [904] on 3 June 1914 at Register Office in Aston. Albert met Emily on the milk round, she was a housemaid and moher's help. His father was given as Benjamin JOHNSON a Silversmith journeyman both name and occupation proved to be not true!!!! Albert's landlady Ellen EDKINS was one of the witnesses, the other was Sampson WEAVER. From 4 June 1914 to November 1914 Albert was resident at Cotterhills Avenue, off Cotterhills Lane in Birmingham. He lived here with Emily for 6 months after getting married. In November 1914 Albert was resident at 86 Albert Road. in Stechford. Later moved to 106 Albert Road. Albert served in the Royal Ordnance Corp from 1915 to 1918. During WW1 he went to Salonica. On his return his son Edward is reputed to have told him 'we do not want any mans here.' He hadn't seen many men around because most of the men were at war. After 1918 Albert was a Gardener in Yardley. Gardener for the Newton's. Mr Newton was a director of warehouse and his wife ( a spiritualist ) insisted on flowers, etc to match decor, when hedge cut too short asked for it to be put back on. He liked gaving living plants as presents: a pair of apple trees to Edward and Daisy on their marriage and Christmas trees to Hazel and Stephen on their first Christmas. Albert died on 24 April 1973 in Stechford.
