Individual Note

Emily told many stories about growing up as the daughter of a farm Bailiff. She told her granddaughter how she was tanned “as brown as a berry” and had not needed make up when she had the role of a Romany in a school play. She also told how they took their bread to the communal oven to be baked, and how the house had a tree growing through it so she hung her clothes from a natural branch. She was probably teasing and elaborating the rough wood frame of the house. Edward and Susan regularly kept two pigs, one for their own table and one to sell. One day Edward put a sickle down on the roof of the sty and some how it fell cutting one of the porkers. The valuable animal was taken to Susan who stitched it up. It was smothered in Zambuck ointment, which was a foul smelling tar like ointment, and bandaged. The pig recovered but Susan, mindful that the flavour may have been tainted by the cure, was careful to keep the unwounded pig for their own use.
