James McMULLIN [837], son of Henry McMULLIN (1824-1898) [839] and Catherine LOGAN (1838- ) [840], was born on 10 March 1859 in Ireland. He appeared in the census on 2 April 1871 at Militia Barracks, Eden St. in Kingston on Thames, Surrey. James McMULLIN 11 was a scholar from Kingston living with his parents and brothers William, Henry and Edward. James served in the 3rd Surrey Militia from 10 March 1873 in Kings Norton, Worcestershire. He married Harriet FROUD [838] in 1878 (estimated). from birth date of first child but the marriage has not been found in the GRO index (searched 1874 - 1890), Wantage Parish Registers 1861-1944 or the Wantage Register Office. James appeared in the census on 3 April 1881 at Burritt Rd in Kingston on Thames. James MC MULLIN 22 was given as Haters? Labo that should probably be painter's labourer. He was from Ireland and with wife Harriett and daughter Beatrice Ann. James appeared in the census on 5 April 1891 at Mill St, in Wantage, Berkshire. James McMULLIN 32 an employed Painter from Ireland was with his wife Harriet and children Beatrice, Lily, Emily, Henry, Edward and Ellen in a 4 room house. James appeared in the census on 31 March 1901 at Mill St. in Wantage. James McMULLIN 42 a house painter and glazier worker from Ireland was with his wife Harriet and their children Harry, Edward, Ellen, Thomas, Willie, Albert V and Maud. James died of Senility on 25 January 1947 in Cholsey, Berkshire. He died in his son-in-law George Perrett's house. George was the informant.

Lily married Bert PAINE [860] before 31 March 1901. On 1901 Census as Lilly PAINE. Lily appeared in the census on 31 March 1901 at 39 Clarence St. in Kingston on Thames. Lilly PAINE 17 a Domestic Servant from Kingston on Thames was with Thomas P GOLDRING 32 an Ironmonger with wife and daughter. We have not found husband on the census. Lily died in 1967 (approx.). | |

Henry James McMULLIN (1885-1958) [853]. Henry was born on 22 January 1885 in Wantage. He was baptised on 10 October 1885 in Wantage. He appeared in the census on 5 April 1891 at Mill St. in Wantage. Edward McMULLIN (1887-1918) [854]. Edward was born on 10 May 1887 in Wantage. He was baptised on 31 May 1887 in Wantage. He appeared in the census on 5 April 1891 at Mill St, in Wantage. Edward was an 4 year old scholar from Wantage living with parents and sisters Beatrice, Lily, Emily and Ellen and brother Henry. Edward appeared in the census on 31 March 1901 at Mill St. in Wantage. Edward was given as the son of James McMullin, aged 13 a seedman's errand boy from Wantage. Also in the household were mother, Harriet, brothers Harry, Thomas, Willie, Albert and sisters Ellen and Maud. Edward married Violet Ellen G HUGHES [9866] Q3 1913 in Wantage District, Berkshire. He served in the Royal Fusiliers from 6 September 1914 to 21 October 1914. He was attested in Houslow and was discharged in Dover as 'Not being likely to become an efficient soldier' because he was 'practically blind in right eye'. He served 46 days. On 6 September 1914 Edward was resident at 9 Lower Boston Rd in Harwell, Berkshire. To 6 September 1914 he was a Gardener. On enlsting for the Royal Fusiliers. Edward served in the The Queen's Regiment Labour Corps from 1915 to 22 May 1918 in France & Flanders. He enlisted in Southall and served in E Surrey Regiment. He was invalided out of army twice with heart trouble but joined the 6th Bn., The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regt.) Labour Corps. He was awarded the Victory and British medals. Edward died of Died of wounds on 22 May 1918 in Crouy-sur-Somme, Somme, France. He was buried on 22 May 1918 in Crouy-sur-Somme. | |
Ellen Mary McMULLIN (1889-1951) [855]. Ellen was born on 20 November 1889 in Wantage. She was baptised on 21 December 1889 in Wantage. She appeared in the census on 5 April 1891 at Mill St, in Wantage. Ellen was given as a 1 year old scholar from Wantage living with parents and sisters Beatrice, Lily and Emily and brothers Henry and Edward. We don't think she could have been at school at the age of 1. Ellen appeared in the census on 31 March 1901 at Mill St. in Wantage. Ellen was given as the daughter of James McMullin, aged 11 and from Wantage. Also in the household were mother, Harriet, brothers Harry, Edward, Thomas, Willie and sister Maud. Ellen married George PERRETT [864] on 7 September 1909 in Wantage. She died in October 1951 in Wallingford, Berkshire. She was buried on 18 October 1951. | |
Frederick Thomas McMULLIN (1891-1995) [356] (known as 'Tom'). Tom was born on 20 November 1891 in Wantage. He was baptised on 20 December 1891 in Wantage. He appeared in the census on 31 March 1901 at Mill St. in Wantage. Thomas McMullin 9 from Wantage was with his parents. Tom was educated at Church of England Boys School to 1903 in Wantage. The school was almost opposite his home. From 1903 to 1906 Tom was a telegraph messenger boy in Wantage. He had to leave the GPO when a postman was demoted to telegraph boy. He managed to get a job in King Alfred Stores. From 1906 to 1913 Tom was bottling and delivering mineral water in Wantage. Mr Clegg gave him a reference for GWR. From 1913 Tom was a Railway Porter in Ogmore Vale, Glamorgan. From 1913 to 28 May 1916 he was resident at 52 Walter Road in Ogmore Vale. In 1916 he was a railway brakeman in Ogmore Vale. He married Sarah Jane DYMENT [125] on 28 May 1916 at St David in Ogmore Vale. After 1917 he was a railway signalman in Wyndham Pits South box in Wyndham, Glamorgan. From 1955 to 24 November 1956 he was a Railway Porter in Wyndham. He retired on 24 November 1956 in Wyndham. Having served 43 years on the railway. From 1973 Tom was resident at 31 Queen Street in Tondu, Glamorgan. He died on 17 July 1995 in Tondu. He was buried on 20 July 1995 in Ogmore Vale. | |
Willie McMULLIN (1894-1989) [856]. Willie was born on 24 July 1894 in Wantage. He was baptised on 21 August 1894 in Wantage. He appeared in the census on 31 March 1901 at Mill St in Wantage. Willie was given as the son of James McMullin, aged 6 and from Wantage. Also in the household were mother, Harriet, brothers Harry, Edward, Thomas, Albert and sisters Ellen and Maud. Willie served in the East Surrey Regiment from 7 December 1914 to 3 June 1916. He was attested in Wantage and served with the 9th Bn of the East Surrey Regiment for 267 days before his battalion joined the British Expeditionary Force in France. He had a gun shot wound right thigh and was gassed. After 36days in France he was returned to England and served in the regiment’s Depot for a further 242days before being Discharged being no longer physically fit for war service. He was awarded the Victory and British Medals and 1915 star. On 7 December 1914 Willie was a Mineral Water Maker. He married Emma Selina CHAPMAN [865] Q1 1919. He died in April 1989 in Swindon Dist, Wiltshire. | |
Albert Victor McMULLIN (1896-1990) [857]. Albert was born on 12 September 1896 in Wantage. He was baptised on 3 November 1896 in Wantage. He appeared in the census on 31 March 1901 at Mill St. in Wantage. Albert V was given as the son of James McMullin, aged 4 and from Wantage. Also in the household were mother, Harriet, brothers Harry, Edward, Willie, Thomas and sisters Ellen and Maud. Albert served in the Royal Berkshire Regt, Labour Corps and Royal Engineers between 1914 and 1918. Wounded at the battle of the Somme returned home on same ship as Henry James. He had a bullet lodged behind his knee but his father refused permission for his leg to be amputated. Albert married Florence Emily M GOODMAN [866] Q4 1922 in Wantage District. He died on 15 July 1990 in Torbay District, Devon. | |
