Joseph FROUD (1723-1783)
Marriage 5 Dec 1698 (age 29-30) Shaw cum Donnington, Berkshire
This parish is some distance from Chaddleworth and it is possible that it was a runaway marriage as the bride was only about 13 years of age at the time. The age for marriage was twelve with consent. (John Knight was a Churchwarden and Yeoman at Chaddleworth and possibly didn't approve.)

Marriage (2)

Spouse Mary CONSTABLE ( -1784)
Marriage 24 Dec 1746 (age 77-78) Chaddleworth, Berkshire
She was a widow when she married Joseph so her maiden name is unknown at present. This appears to have been a marriage of convenience as the leases on the Boxford property were for the life of himself and his wife, and his will states that Mary Constable has agreed to make no demands on his estate but is to receive £5 per year.

Individual Note

Joseph was a man of some substance and in addition to being a Copyholder in the Manor of Chaddleworth, he leased lands in Hungerford Newtown and in Boxford. He carried out repairs to the church in 1699 and the charge for "Materials and Worke by Joseph Frood" was £1-00. He was a churchwarden for many years i.e. "Farmer Frowde was elected Churchwarden" in 1716 and later "Joseph Froude, Headwarden, His Accounts". There are a number of other original documents bearing his signature still in existence.
