Tales of Abermelin
with illustrations by Maggie Taylor
The village of Abermelin snuggles close to a line of hills where flocks of black faced sheep bleat the days away. It nestles in a bend of a gently winding river, which is joined by the Nant Melin the stream which tumbles down from the hill.
Nant Melin has worked hard for the miller before dancing its way past the farm down to the village. It gurgles happily to the children, who throw leaf boats down from the bridge. It laughs at the efforts of the child with a fishing net, before joining the river to splash through the village.
The main road follows the stream down the hill into the village. At the far side of the village it climbs away from the river to pass the lodge at the castle gate.
The castle is at the top of a long winding drive and, from the main state rooms, you have a view right over the village. There is the strong, grey stone tower in the centre of the church. There is the small bell turret on the school’s roof. There is the neat row of cottages with their trim little gardens. And there, close down on the river’s bank, is the pottery with its hive shaped kiln alongside.
The view from the castle is so clear you can see the people going about their daily tasks. Yes, you can see the people and even their animals. It is perhaps the animals that make this village so very special.
Let me tell you now about one of them.....
