He was attested at Ballaghy, Londonderry on the 4 August 1841 aged 17½ and 5ft 6ins tall. His occupation was given as a labourer. He was listed as under age until 4 Feb 1842. The bounty paid to him for enlisting was £3-5-0. The regiment was stationed at Weedon during his time with the regiment. He volunteered for a transfer to the 91st Regiment.

He joined the regiment at Naas. His battalion embarked on the Abercrombie Robertson Transport ship on 27 May 1842. He was on board for 92 days on the way to Cape Town. The voyage ended with the Abercrombie Robinson being wrecked in Table Bay. All aboard were taken ashore but lost their their equipment. In 1843 he went on ship for 11 days to Grayhams Town where he fought in the Kaffir wars. He gained 2 good conduct badges before he was promoted to corporal.

At a Court Martial held on April 4th 1854 Henry was charged with allowing one of an escort to leave. Henry was found not guilty. Three other soldiers from his regiment were also tried at the Court Martial charged with being drunk on duty, absent, habitually drunk and neglect of duty.

Henry McMULLIN 31 was a Bachelor Sergeant in the 91st Regiment of Foot living in the Barracks, Berwick upon Tweed. His father, James McMULLIN, was a Shoemaker. He married Catherine SHARP 22 who was a Spinster Domestic Servant living in Woolmarket, Berwick upon Tweed. Her age was actually 18 but probably gave her age as 22 to avoid the need for parent's consent. She was using the surname of the family who brought her up. No father's name was given. The Minister, James A Miller, performed the ceremony according to the rites and ceremonies of the Church of Scotland. The registrar, George Turner was also present and George and Jane WILSON witnessed the marriage.
