He was attested in Wantage and served with the 9th Bn of the East Surrey Regiment for 267 days before his battalion joined the British Expeditionary Force in France. He had a gun shot wound right thigh and was gassed. After 36days in France he was returned to England and served in the regiment’s Depot for a further 242days before being Discharged being no longer physically fit for war service.
