He was in hospital on 28 Aug 1916 and returned to England with gun shot wound to knee on 2 September. According to family tradition he was wounded at the battle of the Somme and returned home on same ship as Henry James. He had a bullet lodged behind his knee but his father refused permission for his leg to be amputated.
