He embarked on 11 July 1916 and disembarked on 20 July 1916 at Rouen, Normandy in France with the British Expeditionary Force. He was in hospital on 28 Aug 1916 and returned to England with gun shot wound to knee on 2 September. According to family tradition he was wounded at the battle of the Somme and returned home on same ship as Henry James. He had a bullet lodged behind his knee but his father refused permission for his leg to be amputated. | ||
