Parish clerks in Kidlington

Kidlington had a school house since 1591. 116 children were recorded being taught in 4 day schools in 1815. In the early 19th century 58 children were being taught in schools run by John ALLEN and his sister Mary ALLEN (they have not been connected to our ALLEN family).

The curate Edward FIELD had a school built in the centre of the village between 1827-1828 which had 143 children by 1833. The school master was the parish clerk John RAND [16632] who was assisted by a schoolmistress. From the directory entries below this was Mrs Mary COX.  John was already the Parish Clerk in 1841 and remained in office at least until 1881. He died in1886.

The pupils had to pay a small subscription towards the school. British History online mentions that in 1872 the schoolmaster and his wife were both certificated.

John RAND is shown as parish clerk on the census of 1841. In 1851 he was Parish clerk and school master, in 1871 he appears as Schoolmaster, Parish Clerk, Fundowner but his wife Mary nee TAUNT [16633] had no occupation. In 1881 he was Parish Clerk.
