William ELLARD [5136] (1802-1883) the brother of Thomas ELLARD, who was on our direct line, married Maachah HAKESLEY [5137] a sister of Thomas' wife Tabatha. From the 1841 -1881 census returns William's occupation was parish Clerk. He and Maachah were buried in the churchyard.

In loving memory of William ELLARD who died March 22nd 1883 aged 81 years.

Clerk of the Parish of Willoughby for 50 years

also Maachah beloved wife of William ELLARD
who departed this life February 24th 1883 aged 78 years

also Jane grandaughter of the above who died March 21st 1883 aged 21 years.

When you look upon this stone and think how sudden we were gone

Who does not always warning give therefore be careful how you live.

Erected by their affectionate grandson Corp. William ELLARD of the Royal Arty.

William ELLARD [5131] (1764-1846) father of the above was church warden between 1819-1824 in the same parish. He also served as overseer of the poor 1814-1815 and overseer of the highway 1825-26.

Sadly the next grave is that of William and Maachah’s Grandson William [7843] mentioned on the above gravestove and his brother John [5151].

In loving memory of John ELLARD who departed this life January 30th 1882 aged 25

Oh wonderful redemption, Gods remedy for sin

the door of heaven is open, and you may enter in.

Also of Corporal William ELLARD brother of the above who died at Bareilly, India September 8th 1884 in H.M.S. for 6 years aged 27 years

Thou therefore endure hardness as a good soldier of Jesus Christ, no man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who hath chosen to be a soldier.

To the memory of Richard ELLARD who died December 13th 1787 aged 71 years

I’ve crost the seas and travell'd far and near

And no rest cud find but in my saviour dear

So farewell vain world I bid a due to thee

To live with Christ to all Eternity

We have not yet connected this Richard with our family.


William FIELD [9225], who was briefly married to Mary ELLARD, an aunt of William ELLARD the church warden, was a regular signatory at marriages during 1760-71 which could indicate that he too held office in Willoughby most likely as parish clerk.
